Ingredients

  • 6 large eggs

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 cup bourbon

  • 1/2 cup Frangelico (hazelnut liqueur)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until well combined and slightly frothy.
  • In a large saucepan, combine the heavy cream and milk. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until it just begins to simmer.
  • Slowly pour about 1 cup of the hot cream mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  • Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining cream mixture, whisking constantly.
  • Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 160°F on a thermometer).
  • Remove from heat and stir in the bourbon, Frangelico, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Pour the eggnog into a large bowl or pitcher and cover with plastic wrap.
  • Refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight until thoroughly chilled.
  • Before serving, whisk the eggnog to recombine any separated ingredients. Pour into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg or crushed hazelnuts if desired.

Tips

  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the bourbon and Frangelico and replace with 1 1/2 cups of hazelnut-flavored coffee creamer.
  • If you prefer a thicker eggnog, you can whip some additional heavy cream and fold it into the chilled mixture before serving.
  • This eggnog will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
